Uzhgorod city — is the administrative center of Uzhhorod Transcarpathian region. This is a historic center of Carpathian Ukraine.
Uzhgorod is located at an altitude of approximately 120 m in the foothills of the Carpathians on the Uzh River. The city borders with Slovakia, there are two border crossings: Uzhgorod car — Vysne German and broad-gauge railway for freight Pavlovo — Matevske Voykovtse. The population of Uzhgorod is about 118 thousand people.
Uzhgorod city rich in many monuments of architecture — Uzhgorod Castle, Bishop’s Palace (nowadays the University Library), a Catholic church in the baroque style and Town hall. In the 1930’s by Czech architects was founded architecture center inUzhgorod in forms close to constructivism. In Soviet times the city was built by the general plan of the Uzhgorod city, at the same time were development of green area of the city, and was built many public buildings and monuments.
Nowadays in Uzhgorod city there are several institutions and schools, local history museum, art museum, Transcarpathian museum of folk architecture and way of life, Uzhgorod University, Botanical Garden, Ukrainian music and drama theater, puppet theater, Regional Philharmonic Hall (formerly a synagogue), more than 20 schools, a gymnasium, a lyceum , a number of churches.
